Obituary

Ronald E. Shaffer, 75, of Manheim, PA, passed away peacefully on Monday evening, August 31, 2015, at Lancaster General Hospital following a 20 month illness with cancer. Born in Listie, Somerset County, PA, he was the son of the late Andrew J. and Hazel Enos Shaffer of Somerset and the foster son of the late Leon and Elmira Knepper of Berlin. He was the husband of Phyllis Groff Shaffer. Ron was a member of Brothers Valley Church of the Brethren in Brotherton, PA. Following graduation from high school, he served for two years in Brethren Volunteer Service beginning in Fresno, CA, and ending his service at Brethren Village. He was employed for 10 years by the former Myers Metered Gas Company in Manheim and later self-employed in home repair and remodeling. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting. More recently, he enjoyed gardening and working in his shop. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Kevin E., husband of Marjorie Hosler Shaffer, and Kathleen M. Shaffer, each of Manheim; four grandchildren, Kent, husband of Cherith Shaffer, of Manheim, Erika, wife of Scott Zacharda, of Lititz, Kara, wife of Michael Good, of Manheim, and Michele Shaffer, of Manheim; three great grandchildren; three siblings, Barry, husband of Stacey Shaffer, Pierpont, OH, Ruth Swartz of Harrisburg, and Joann Danellie of Johnstown; six foster siblings, James, husband of Esther Mowry, of Somerset, Mary Beth, wife of Paul Williams, of Boswell, Jane Smiley of Berlin, Helen Louise, wife of Mark Mishler, of Hollsopple, Eileen, wife of Charles Horning, of Berlin, and Amy, wife of Wayne Petenbrink, of Garrett. He was preceded in death by five siblings, James and Roger, Ellen, Audra and Linda. A funeral service will be held on Friday morning, September 4, 2015 at 11:00 AM at White Oak Church of the Brethren, 1211 North Penryn Road, Manheim, PA, with Mervin Groff, Carl Groff, and Carl Brubaker officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. The family will receive guests at the church on Friday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of the service. Please omit flowers.
