Carl S. Summy, 88, of Manheim, PA, went home to be with his kind and merciful Father on Monday evening, October 14, 2013 at Lancaster General Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Mastersonville, PA, he was the son of the late George H. and Katie Shearer Summy. He was the husband of Katharine E. Buck Summy for 45 years before her passing in 1997.
Carl was a member of East Fairview Church of the Brethren and also attended his childhood congregation, Chiques Church of the Brethren, both in Manheim. During World War II, he served as a corporal in the United States Army. Prior to retiring in 1989, he was a truck driver for the former Penn Dairies. Earlier, he delivered livestock feed to local farmers. Following retirement, he continued to haul raw milk for Burkhart's Milk Hauling, Inc. in Mount Joy, PA.
He was a volunteer for the Nearly Nu store and a driver for Meals on Wheels, both in Manheim. He also provided transportation to appointments for those unable to drive. He enjoyed collecting old sad irons and glass milk bottles, especially Pensupreme Dairies.
He is survived by three children, Craig E., married to Patricia A. Blocher Summy, of Quentin, PA, George R. Summy, with whom he lived, and Ann S., married to Scott A. Moyer, of Manheim; four grandchildren, Laura A. Summy, Jessica J. Summy, Chad Z. Summy, and Jason A. Summy; a sister, Alta Moore of Elizabethtown; a sister-in-law, Dot Summy of Mount Joy, PA; and a brother-in-law, Irvin Graybill, of Stevens, PA. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Melanie Jo Summy, and three siblings, Ray Summy, Grace Graybill, and Ruth Geib.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday afternoon, October 22, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Chiques Church of the Brethren, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim with Pastors Jimm Roland and Dana Statler officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. The family will receive guests at Chiques church on Monday evening from 6-8:00 PM and on Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 PM until the time of the service. The family requests that flowers please be omitted.
